high order aberrations
High Order Aberrations (HOAs) are small optical irregularities or imperfections of the eye that cannot be corrected by simple plus, minus or cylinder corrections. These can annoyingly disrupt and reduce your vision.
Fortunately, there are options to significantly reduce or solve these eye defects.
What it is, what the options are and how it works, you can read further on this website.
What are spherical aberrations:
Standard eye imperfections can be corrected with plus, or minus and with a cylinder.
Spherical aberrations, are small, complex optical imperfections in an optical system. For example, in a camera, binoculars, telescope but certainly also in the eye. These types of imperfections are called high-order aberrations (HOAs). Some examples of high order aberrations are coma and trefoil. These refractive errors cannot be corrected fully or partially by glasses but only by special means.
What effects do HOA’s give:
Double vision with one eye, halos, shadow images, blurred and/or colourful edges to images. But also poor night vision, blurred vision and especially contrast loss in dim light.
Risks in which these aberrations may occur:
The most common complaints from the effects of HOAs I encounter in my practice are due to:
- Keratoconus
- Eye damage such as scarring
- After eye laser treatment
- Dry eyes
- Cataracts
How to reduce HOA’s aberrations:
With special measuring equipment, the high-order aberrations can be detected, and classified.
Ovitz has developed a technique, which allows spherical aberrations to be corrected in whole or in part using special contact lenses.
This Ovitz technology can be applied to different versions, from various manufacturers of form-stable lenses.
Wavefront HOA’s corrections:
Correction of spherical aberrations is precision work. Accurate determination of the eye surface, and a 100% fitting of a contact lens form the basis for the fitting of HOAs corrected contact lenses.
What will the HOAs be corrected with:
High-order aberrations are great to correct with scleral lenses. A very comfortable contact lens that has the property of always sitting in the same position on the eye. The HOA correction is thus always corrected exactly.
